No, I don’t think that means you belong.
Well, depends on which definition of belong you like. If belong just means to be a part of, or be the property of, then I suppose you belong…
But I think belonging truly means to be a suitable and APPROPRIATE part of the group. Like milk belongs on the dairy aisle, you know?? Belonging implies a certain sense of having meaning.
So I don’t think just labeling yourself as a member of those groups means you belong.
I’m not saying you don’t belong, but that the evidence that you presented does not illustrate to me that you actually belong.
Comment by Kristy 14 June 2008 @ 7:41 amExactly my point.
So why does the world associate and recognize group membership so much? Howw come if I’m a VW tuner and not on VWVortex then I’m not respected? How come if I don’t belong to any extra curricular clubs, colleges don’t look twice at your application? How come if you’re not in a gang in Compton you get beat up so much ’til you’re forced to join one (for protection). Maybe thats just how the world works?
Comment by ethnick 14 June 2008 @ 9:47 amIt’s how we work as humans. Like Aristotle argues, no man is truly happy on his own. If you were put on some beautiful tropical island, with all the material things your heart desired you would still never experience the deepest satisfaction of the human connection. We like to associate, and feel like we belong. For better or worse this is what our entire mindset revolves around.
